The Union

With the help of membership fees, donations, sponsorships, and material donations, "Kinder in Kenia" supports projects that benefit children and their immediate families in the Kilifi district of Kenya.

The association focuses its aid projects on the village of Kikambala and its surroundings. Many people in this part of Kenya live in extreme poverty, without work, without adequate food, and under poor hygienic conditions. Children are the worst affected, as they are denied access to schools and training.

Children who grow up in such circumstances can hardly escape poverty even as adults, and thus this condition is passed on from one generation to the next. Under the motto "Helping people to help themselves," "Kinder in Kenia" has made it its mission to support these people.

We manage various projects. Our main focuses are agriculture, a sewing school with an attached studio, child sponsorships, and financial support for village youth in their education. A carpentry workshop with apprenticeships is currently being set up.

Through these projects, villagers also receive meaningful, paid work that makes them proud members of their society again.

In silence and inner peace, we develop new strength and find true harmony. God's power will enable us to do everything for the good of all.

Let us thank God for all the love he gives us in so many ways and in so many places. In response, as an act of gratitude, let us give hope to the youth of this world.

The future of the club

The association continues to rely heavily on its members, who support "Children in Kenya" with their contributions. We strive to recruit new members through personal discussions and our informational materials to ensure the long-term continuation of our projects.

We consider it necessary to relieve Ms. Grene Schait-Maleko of her day-to-day duties. We would like to hire an employee who will independently handle the necessary office work. To cover this employee's salary, we are seeking assistance from external sources.

This allows Grene Schait-Maleko to maintain more contact with donors, develop new projects, and, if necessary, monitor our projects in Kenya. With the proceeds from her Kenyan shop and food stand, which she runs in Basel with her son, Grene Schait-Maleko continues to support "Children in Kenya" financially.

Collecting donations

Whenever possible, we seek out conversations with people. This happens over the phone or at market stalls, where we are represented with our food truck or "Children in Kenya" sales stand.

We write to private individuals, church and non-profit institutions, and companies and inform them about our work through our brochures.

Donations

We are committed to turning the funds entrusted to us into effective, long-term aid. As a Kenyan, Ms. Grene Schait-Maleko is intimately familiar with the hardship in her country. Her many years of experience in the healthcare system, her understanding of the local bureaucracy, and the mentality of the rural population help us provide targeted assistance where the need is greatest.

The «Kinder in Kenia» association keeps administrative costs as low as possible. For sponsorships of children and young people, the entire donation is used in Kenya.

With membership fees and donations, we support our other projects in Kikambala and finance our administrative expenses.

Our administrative effort

The association «Kinder in Kenia» does not pay any salaries or other compensation to the president or employees in Switzerland.

We finance costs such as office rent, telephone, internet access, and consumables through profits from our own food truck, sales of Kenyan handicrafts, and membership fees and donations. We also always welcome donations in kind to help reduce our costs.

Upon request, we are happy to provide our donors with insight into our accounting records.

Important for the association «Kinder in Kenia» is:

We don't want to give anything away, but rather provide help for self-help. The young people in our projects need to learn and work to keep their jobs.

Projects in Kikambala

This challenge has united people from Switzerland and the Kilifi District since 1995. With your solidarity and financial support, we in the Kilifi District can use our strength, our skills, and the knowledge of our time to make this dream come true. Despite poverty and violence, children can pave their way to independent, fulfilling lives.

Donations and membership fees help us finance our various projects. We urgently want to complete the construction of a protective wall around the project site. This measure unfortunately became necessary due to an increase in thefts by outside gangs. The protective wall will make unauthorized entry to the area significantly more difficult and simplify guarding.

A carpentry school is also being planned. We received two woodworking machines as a gift, which have already arrived in Kikambala. Now we need a building and woodworking tools. We are confident that with carpentry training, young people in Kenya will find work and a livelihood for themselves and their families. This area of Kenya also lacks a maternity ward. Expectant mothers have to travel very long distances for consultations and the delivery of their children, sometimes on foot, sometimes in shared taxis on poorly maintained gravel roads. Therefore, we want to build a maternity ward with an access road.

Vision

project image

All our projects should always be sustainable and serve as role models.

We want to continue our professionally run vocational school for tailors in Kikambala and finance our apprenticeships through the sale of textiles.

Our agricultural project aims to continue to improve the local nutritional situation and create jobs.

A building will be built for the carpentry workshop, where young people will be trained and products will be manufactured, which will be sold at market prices.

A Kenyan employee of the association “Children in Kenya” continues to work as a midwife and provides competent advice to the population on issues of health care, family planning, and nutrition.

Education is and remains a very important factor in escaping poverty and lack of prospects. Therefore, in addition to providing schooling for children, we also want to offer introductory courses in IT, accounting, and languages for young people and adults.

In each of our projects, we strive for independence from foreign donors. Wherever possible, our projects should be self-sustaining.

Profits generated will flow to our other or new projects. Our administrative overhead will remain minimal.

In Switzerland, members and employees of the association “Kinder in Kenia” continue to work on a voluntary basis or are sponsored by independent sponsors.

We will continue to be a transparent aid organization. Our donors have access to our accounting and know exactly where their donations go.

Our donors commit themselves long-term because they know that their contributions will provide maximum support for the project they choose.
